Methods of Investigation of Igneous and Metamorphic Rocks

Study program:
Petrology and Geochemistry (V semester -BsC)
Name of subject: Methods of Investigation of Igneous and Metamorphic Rocks
Instructors:
Prof. Vladica Cvetković
Status: Optional
ECTS: 5
Prerequisites: basic Mineralogy, Petrology of magmatic and metamorphic rocks
Course Objectives:
Getting known with the methods of investigating the petrochemical composition, petrogenesis and age of magmatic and metamorphic rocks. The major aim is to introduce the students with the most important methods and to understand the main theoretical principles of the most significant methods that are temporarily inaccessible but represent standard methods worldwide. The students will be acquainted with the process of data acquisition, processing and interpretation as well as they will understand the petrogenetic context of all the obtained data.
Learning Outcomes:
The capability of understanding of basic principles of the main methods of investigations of magmatic and metamorphic rocks as well as the capability of practical application of a number of these methods. Getting skills for analytical thinking. Acquiring skills for individual or group data acquisition and processing and interpretation. The potential for acquiring relevant geological information from raw data as well as for recognizing and correction of analytical errors.
Content:

Theory teaching
Introduction to methods of investigations of magmatic and metamorphic rocks. Field work. Methods of optical investigations. Chemical methods. Radiometric methods of investigations of rocks’ age (K/Ar, Ar/Ar, U-Th-Pb and others).

Practical teaching
Individual and supervised students’ work using petrographic microscope, petroscope, universal stage and PC.

Suggested Reading List:
