Operations Research Methods in Mining Engineering

Course Objectives:
Acquainting with operations research methods, acquiring knowledge on application of operations research methods in resolving practical issues in mining engineering
Learning Outcomes:
Student is trained in using the operations research methods in mining engineering and acquired skills necessary to solve problem existing in mining production systems.
Content:

Theory teaching
1. Introduction. Importance and history of operations research; 2. Mathematical models (concept, functions, structure, time, development, testing, application...); 3. Linear programming (introduction, graphical solution of LP problems, standard form); 4. Simplex method, Dual problem; 5. Special cases of LP, Transport problem, Hungarian algorithm, Linear programming applications; 6. Nonlinear programming (introduction, general form, Kuhn-Tucker theorem, unconstrained optimization methods, constrained optimization methods, applications); 7. Integer programming (branching method, bounding method); 8. Seminal paper preparatory session; 9. Project management and network planning (network diagram structure, time analysis, Gantt chart); 10. Game theory (introduction, mixed strategies, Neumann’s theorem); 11. Dynamic programming (management processes with multiple stages, optimality principle, recurrent relations, DP techniques, applications); 12. Replacement theory (special case of DP, models with limited and undefined intervals, applications); 13. Inventory theory (supply chain management systems, types of management systems, stock costs, mathematical models of stock management, applications); 14. Multicriteria optimization (introduction, concept, multiobjective and multiattribute decision making); 15. Risk and reliability analysis (introduction, risk assessment, qualitative reliability analysis)

Practical teaching
1. Linear Programming. Simplex method (3 sessions); 2. Nonlinear programming. Integer programming (2 sessions); 3. Game theory, Dynamic programming (2 sessions); 4. Replacement theory (2 sessions) 5. Inventory theory (2 sessions); 6. Multicriteria optimization (2 sessions); 7. Reliability and risk analysis (2 sessions)
