Study program:
Geology (IV semester -BsC) |
Name of subject: Geochemistry |
Instructors:
Prof. Dejan Prelević |
Status: Compulsory |
ECTS: 6 |
Prerequisites: No |
Course Objectives: The aim of the course is to give a student information about the major geochemical principles, to explain the mechanisms regulating the workings—past and present—of the major geological systems such as the Earth’s mantle, its crust, its oceans, and its atmosphere. The course covers the ways how the chemical elements are distributed within different geospheres, how also the isotopes distribute. Also, the course will give information about our understanding of many terrestrial and planetary processes, such as mantle convection, the formation of planets, the origin of granite and basalt, sedimentation, changes in the Earth’s oceans and climates, the origin of mineral deposits. |
Learning Outcomes: The student will be able to understand major geochemical principles, he will understand how major terrestrial and planetary geochemical reservoirs are generated. |
Content:
Theory teaching Major geochemical principles, The age, composition and the origin of the Earth and the terrestrial planets, The Properties of the Elements, Geochemical differentiation of chemical elements and isotopes, Radiogenic isotopes as geochemical tracers, Radiogenic isotopes as chronometers, Stable isotope geochemistry, Magmatic geochemistry, Sedimentary geochemistry, Metamorphic geochemistry, Geochemistry of hydrosphere and atmosphere, Practical teaching Exercises are numerical and cover different geochemical problems |
