Course Objectives: The objective of the course is to familiarize the students with basic concepts of structural filed mapping. This involves orientation in the field, finding place of observation on the map and specific conditions of the field work. Also, the field work includes: collecting basic structural data, recognizing and describing morphological features and characteristics of genesis of planar and linear geological features. |
Learning Outcomes: After completing the course students will be able to orientate themselves in the field and to collect structural data. Also, they will be able to independently recognize morphologies and geometries of structural features, and understand their relative chronology. Therefore, they would do preliminary classification of observed structures in the field, and their genetical and kinematical characteristics. |
Content:
Theory teaching A set of 4-6 introductory lectures related to logistics and fieldwork. Detailed guidance focus on fieldwork orientation method, assessment and accurate positioning of the observation point, specific working conditions, possible inconveniences, accidents and other unplanned events and ways of overcoming them. Introduction to field equipment, concept of observation points and procedure for collecting structural as well geological data. Practical teaching Practical training within the course includes team work on the field by pre-formed groups of 4-5 students. Specification of duty responsibility for each member within the group through field work. Introduction of collecting procedures for structural and other geological data during fieldwork. How to select and position the observation point, recognize and determinate different geological structures, how to observe structural phenomena and recording data in the field diary. Insight of penetrative and nonpenetrative geological structures, the required amount of data collected for statistical analysis concerning the type of research and observations at mesoscopic scale. Morphology of geological structures, descriptive elements, geometry, origin, kinematics etc. Classification of observed planar and linear structural elements. Measurement of spatial position and attitude of ductile and brittle structures (fold elements, joints, faults, cleavage etc. Work at the base camp includes the cabinet part of the work based on collected data during the field work and preliminary processing of structural data. Statistical analysis of planar and linear elements. Production of contour diagrams, rosettes, Sander’s ring diagrams and other net presentation for all different group of collected data. Analysis and interpretation of obtained results in wider tectonic context. Presentation of final group report with appropriate attachments (field work sketches, outcrop photographs, cross sections etc). |

Conduct of the Course: Independent research work of each student (within group/team of 4-5 students) on the field for a period of 5 days (Kopaonik -Brzeće), which includes at least 8-hour field work on collection of structural data on previously planned routes and afternoon work in base camp on the document preparation and processing of collected data. The outcome of the fieldwork is documented in the form of field logs, outcrop photographs, cross sections, sketches of geological structures, stereographic net presentation of structural elements, structural analysis and interpretation of data in final reports. |
