Course Objectives: This class will cover the basic knowledge on the most important groups of fossil flora and fauna, as well as on the principles of taxonomy and classification. |
Learning Outcomes: Ability to recognize characteristic fossils and to use them for orientation in geologic time. |
Content:
Theory teaching The principles of classical, evolutionary and phylogenetic systematics. Taxonomy and characteristics of fossil plants. Introduction to body structure of the most important fossil invertebrate and vertebrate taxa, also
considering their evolution, biostratigraphy and palaeogeography. Practical teaching Determination of the most important fossils. |

Conduct of the Course: Lectures - powerpoint presentation. Lab practicals will focus on the identification, anatomy, preservation, occurrence and paleoecology of the fossil groups. |
