Mechanics of Unsaturated Soils

Study program:
Geotechnics (III semester -PhD)
Name of subject: Mechanics of Unsaturated Soils
Instructors:
Prof. Gordana Hadž-Niković
Status: Optional
ECTS: 10
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
Introducing with basic principles of mechanics of unsaturated soil.
Learning Outcomes:
Applying principles of mechanics of unsaturated soil in geotechnical engineering.
Content:

Theory teaching
Unsaturated soil - need for research and laboratory testing. Subject and purpose of investigations of unsaturated soil. Historical development of mechanics of unsaturated soil. Fundamental physical and mechanical characteristics of unsaturated soil: soil phase relationships, stresses variants, suction, unsaturated shear strength. Constitutive relationships of unsaturated soils and their mechanical properties. Laboratory testing for defining mechanical properties of unsaturated soil. Applying the results of field investigations and laboratory testings of unsaturated soil in geostatical analyses: Lateral earth pressures of unsaturated soil, bearing capacity of unsaturated soil, stability of slopes in unsaturated soil.

Practical teaching
Exercises follow the material from lectures. Computing exercises and preparing seminar papers.
