Name of subject: Physical Properties of the Earth’s Interior |
Instructors:
Prof. Vesna Cvetkov |
Status: Compulsory |
ECTS: 5 |
Prerequisites: - |
Course Objectives: The aim of the course is to help students acquire the knowledge of the basics of complex physical processes that occur on Earth’s surface and in its interior, as well as geophysical methods, which are used for testing the physical properties and structure of the Earth’s interior. |
Learning Outcomes: Learning outcomes of the course is to acquire knowledge and competencies required for the study of the physical properties and structure of the Earth’s interior, as well as the basis for further development in this area at higher levels of study. |
Content:
Theory teaching The place and importance of geophysical methods to solve the problem of the Earth’s interior structure. The importance of the knowledge of the processes in the Earth for analyzing the data measured at the Earth’s surface. the zones). Definition of the Earth’s zonal model based on the results of seismological research (discontinuities, aggregate states of the zones). Distribution of density in the Earth’s interior. Distribution of heat (heat sources, heat transfer) and pressure in the Earth’s interior. Processes in the mantle. The origin of the Earth’s magnetic field. Telluric currents. Earth’s shape, ellipsoid and geoid determination. Changes in the shape of the Earth (pulsations, rotation). Geophysical basics of modern geotectonic theories. Practical teaching Solving theoretical and practical problems. Preparation of seminar work on a given topic. |
