Prerequisites: -

Course Objectives: An interdisciplinary approach to technological and engineering problems related to energy and sustainable development. Educating and introducing students with the basic concepts and definitions related to energy and sustainable development, sustainable development principles, as well as the technical, environmental, economic, legal and social aspects of sustainability, which are key factors in providing economic, environmental and social balance of the society.

Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: make a systematic analysis of problems related to energy, sustainable development, energy policy and planning; analyze the economic and social development of modern technological changes, globalization, legality, etc. Students would be able to calculate and analyze a variety of indicators of sustainable development, and to make decisions related to energy planning.

Environmental aspects of energy development; Emissions from the energy sector; Climate change; Sustainable development principles; Rio Declaration; UN Millennium Development Goals; Indicators of sustainable development; The problems of unsustainable development; The causes and consequences of demographic explosion; Sustainable energy development; Economics of natural resources; Environmental damages; The concept of sustainable technological progress; Energy efficiency; Policies and measures to support sustainable development; Sustainable development and international institutions; Legal aspects of environmental protection; Energy market; Energy policy; Security of energy supply.

Practical teaching
Presentation of seminar papers and discussions on the topics given in the lectures.

Conduct of the Course: Lectures are given by the "ex cathedra" method with the support of presentations. A part of lectures is dedicated to "case study" method, i.e to analyses of characteristic cases and examples. Preparation of seminar paper is obligatory. It includes writing and public presentation. Seminar papers elaborate topics previously given in lectures.
