Volcanology

Study program:
Petrology and Geochemistry (VIII semester -MsC)
Regional geology (VIII semester -MsC)
Name of subject: Volcanology
Instructors:
Prof. Vladica Cvetković
Status: Optional
ECTS: 5
Prerequisites: N/A
Course Objectives:
Acquiring knowledge about volcanic and postvolcanic processes and of the origin of volcanogenic products. The goal of the subject is to offer theoretical and practical basis for understanding the origin of volcanogenic facies, their lithology and petrography, mechanism of deposition, as well as introduction to the modes of investigations and monitoring and predicting volcanic eruptions. Getting introduced to the temporary active volcanic regions worldwide.
Learning Outcomes:
Getting capable for understanding volcanic processes in general, i.e. the origin of modern and ancient volcanic provinces. Having skills of applying the volcanological approach in studying igneous complexes. Getting ready for performing geological mapping in modern and ancient volcanic areas.
Content:

Theory teaching
Presentation of major physical characteristics of effusive and explosive volcanic processes, Types of volcanic activity. Principles of classification of volcanic rocks and volcanogenic facies. Effusive volcanic activity and formation of coherent and volcaniclastic facies. Explosive volcanic activity and formation of pyroclastic facies. Postvolcanic processes. Postvolcanic erosion and formation of redeposited volcanogenic deposits. Postvolcanic processes related to the formation of ore deposits. Predicting volcanic eruptions and volcanic hazard. The cubject’s content is conceptualized in a way to be understandable for students of all geological modules.

Practical teaching
Introduction to examples of various volcanogenic facies in recent and ancient volcanic terrains. Monitoring of currently active volcanoes using web platforms and reports of volcano observatories. The solving of volcanological problems through discussions and examples from the literature. Writing seminar papers and their presentation.
