Stratigraphy of the Dinarides of Serbia

Study program:
Paleontology (VIII semester -MsC)
Petrology and Geochemistry (VIII semester -MsC)
Regional geology (VIII semester -MsC)
Name of subject: Stratigraphy of the Dinarides of Serbia
Instructors:
Prof. Dejan Radivojević
Status: Compulsory
ECTS: 5
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
Objective of the course: The aim of the course STRATIGRAPHY OF DINARIDES is to enable the student to master modern information on the stratigraphy of the Dinarides of Serbia and to contribute to the completion knowledge of the geological structure of Serbia. In addition, it should improve the ability to observe, abstract and reason in solving specific stratigraphic problems related to the Dinarides.
Learning Outcomes:
Outcome of the course: Introducing students to the most important knowledge in the field of stratigraphy of western parts of Serbia. Application of the principles of stratigraphic classification with specific examples in the Dinarides. Training for the use of stratigraphical data for explaining the geological setting of Western Serbia.
Content:

Theory teaching
Elementary facts about chronostratigraphic units found in Dinarides. Local chrono- and facial stratotypes, their importance for determination of the position of Serbia in the geotectonic sense in certain time sections. Specific characteristics of the largest stratigraphic units in the territory of Western Serbia. Formations of the region, their significance, characteristics and distribution. Paleontological content and its significance for the formations. A special review of the fossiliferous sites and their stratigraphic significance.

Practical teaching
Drawing geological coulmns of certain sites and marking appropriate areas on maps. Drawing synthetic geological columns and their interpretation. Special review of the character of associations of fauna and its significance for correlation, reconstruction of the environment and determining the geological age of the formations.
