Basics of Geophysics

Study program:
Geology (III semester -BsC)
Name of subject: Basics of Geophysics
Instructors:
Prof. Dragana Đurić
Status: Compulsory
ECTS: 3
Prerequisites: Mathematics 1, Physics 1
Course Objectives:
The objective of the course is enable students to apply the acquired knowledge in order to solve problems from the domain they deal with.
Learning Outcomes:
The outcome of the course is the acquisition of basic knowledge of the physical properties of the Earth and geophysical methods, as well as the application of particular methods in solving various geological problems. Students will be able to understand and follow geophysical surveys in mixed teams engaged in solving various geological problems.
Content:

Theory teaching
The course consists of several parts. After introducing geophysics as a science, the conditions for the application of geophysical methods are defined. Then, the basic settings and possibilities of each of the five (the most frequently used) geophysical methods are presented. They are represented through the acquisition, processing and interpretation of data. 2-3 terms are intended for the every method. Finally, the importance of the correlation of all methods with each other, as well as the geophysical data with geology, is presented. The economic foundations of geophysical research are also discussed.

Practical teaching
Interpretation of geophysical maps. Qualitative and quantitative interpretation of geophysical anomalies on simple models. Correlation with geological data on examples from practice.
