Petrology of Ophiolite

Study program:
Geology (II semester -PhD)
Name of subject: Petrology of Ophiolite
Instructors:
Prof. Danica Srećković - Batočanin
Status: Optional
ECTS: 10
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
Introducing with the importance of ophiolites in reconstruction of geological past of an area. Tectonic setting and geodynamics. Significance of metamorphic rocks in their base, i.e. metamorphic sole.
Learning Outcomes:
qualifying for fieldwork and desk-jobs (microscopic determination of rocks from the ocean crust and those from the mantle), interpretation of geochemical data, P-T conditions of metamorphism as the key for conditions during the closure of an ocean.
Content:

Theory teaching
Introducing with ophiolites: tectonites- mantle rocks and cumulates - rocks from the ocean crust. Leucocratic assemblages. Geochemistry and genesis of ophiolites. Metamorphic rocks underlying ophiolite complexes. Ophiolite melange. Mechanism of the ophiolite emplacement. Ophiolites in Serbia.

Practical teaching
Exercises by use of microscope (determination of rocks and their fabric and mineral composition). Creation of diagrams and their interpreting.
