Rock Mechanics

Study program:
Geotechnics (IX semester -MsC)
Name of subject: Rock Mechanics
Instructors:
Prof. Zoran Berisavljević
Status: Compulsory
ECTS: 6
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
Acquiring basic knowledge on natural rock stress state, redistribution of stress around engineering or mining underground and ground objects, causes of underground pressures, as well as their measurement and control.
Learning Outcomes:
Familiarizing with the importance of the rock mechanics and enabling the students to apply acquired knowledge in geotechnical investigations for design, construction and exploitation of objects.
Content:

Theory teaching
1. Natural stresses of rock masses, basic terms definitions, theoretical background. 2. Secondary stress state in rock masses by the theory of elasticity and plasticity. 3. Measuring methods of primary and secondary stresses. 4. Results of the stress measurements in rocks. 5. Definition and types of underground pressures. 6. Theories of underground pressures, their development and control. 7. In-situ methods of investigating underground pressures. 8. Rockslope stability. Underground excavation stability. 9. Theoretical principles and technical conditions of laboratory and in-situ investigations of rock properties. Extrapolation of results to the entire rock massive. 10. Application of scaled models tests in rock mechanics.

Practical teaching
Familiarizing with the measuring equipment and instruments for measuring primary and secondary stresses in rock masses around the excavation objects. Measurement of underground pressures for monitoring and control of the underground pressure monitoring. Numerical problems related to the experimental investigation and solving practical problems, examples from practice.
