Designing a Geoengineering Research

Study program:
Geotechnics (VIII semester -BsC)
Name of subject: Designing a Geoengineering Research
Instructors:
Prof. Dušan Berisavljević
Status: Compulsory
ECTS: 6
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
Familiarizing the students with the concept of engineering-geological investigation design.
Learning Outcomes:
Enabling the students for designing the engineering-geological investigations, independently.
Content:

Theory teaching
1. Definitions of basic terms: area of interest, terrain – from the aspect of various geological disciplines, rock, rock mass, rock mass sample. 2. Terrain construction. 3. Planning – objectives, principles, and planning methods. 4. Planning of geological investigation works – spatial and urban planning, civil engineering design. 5. Purpose of engineering-geological investigation project. 6. Project objective, Project of engineering-geological investigations. 7. Generic content of the engineering-geological investigations project. 8. General data of the project. Base maps: topographic, geological, and engineering-geological maps, aero-photographs. 9. Graphic documentation – production of specific appendices. 10. Text – table of content: Introduction, General information on the area of interest, Visualization and analysis of related work results with conclusion on level of previous investigation, Important problems that are to be solved by planned investigation, Concept and methodology of investigation. 11. Text – table of content: Specification of investigation works with the description of the technical conditions for their undertaking, their dynamics, estimated costs, and economic justification; Working safety, and environmental protection measures. 12. Text – table of content: Finalizing the table of content, list of references and documentation, Professional supervision over engineering-geological investigation activities, and procedure of contracting the undertaking of engineering-geological investigation. 13. Technical control of the engineering-geological investigation project – content of the report. 14. Project of various types of investigation works (drilling, digging, logging, hydrogeological, geophysical and geotechnical investigations) – when to apply them and which data can be obtained by their application. 15. Legislative regulations for engineering-geological investigation projects (Low of mining and geological investigations, Low of planning and construction, Low of environmental protection), technical regulations and norms.

Practical teaching
1. Practicing a project of engineering-geological investigation of landslide – completing graphical appendices and text. 2. Practicing a project of engineering-geological investigation for determining the conditions and feasibility of building-up a settlement – completing graphical appendices and text. 3. Practicing a project of engineering-geological investigation for determining conditions and feasibility for underground object construction (tunnels, shelters, garages) – completing graphical appendices and text. 4. Practicing a project of engineering-geological investigation for determining conditions and feasibility for dam construction – completing graphical appendices and text. 5. Practicing a project of engineering-geological investigation for determining conditions and feasibility for bridge construction – completing graphical appendices and text. 6. Technical control – completing the report.
