Methods of Engineering – Geological Research

Course Objectives:
Familiarizing the students with the methodology of engineering-geological investigations and application of appropriate methods in solving various geotechnical problems.
Learning Outcomes:
Enabling the students for independent application of diverse investigation methods in spatial and urban planning, design, and environmental protection, as well as in construction of various objects.
Content:

Theory teaching
1. Introduction, scope, field research objectives and methods. 2. Engineering-geological estimations and models. 3. Engineering-geological field mapping. 4. Types of engineering-geological maps. 5. Geological, engineering-geological, and geotechnical cross-sections. 6. Investigation works – types, conditions, and applications. 7. Borehole drilling and logging. 8. Investigations in boreholes: slug tests, and permeability test (WPT), monitoring of the water table. 9. Geophysical logging – methods, applications, analysis, and interpretation of results. 10. Geotechnical investigations: pressuremeter test, penetration test, dilatometer probe test – procedure, areas of application, analysis and interpretation of the results. 11. Geotechnical investigations: deformation properties, mechanical strengths, and stress state. 12. Geophysical investigation – types of tests, areas of application, and analysis and interpretation of results. 13. Sampling for laboratory tests. 14. Geotechnical monitoring of geological and engineering-geological processes. 15. Statistic methods of processing engineering-geological investigation data.

Practical teaching
1. Analysis and interpretation of the engineering-geological map content. 2. Drawing geological, engineering-geological, and geotechnical cross-sections. 3. Analysis of engineering-geological factors relevant for general urban planning. 4. Engineering-geological logging of boreholes. 5. Analysis and interpretation of static and dynamic penetration test results. 6. Analysis and interpretation seismic and geoelectric test results. 7. Slug test and WPT test – procedure, analysis and interpretation of results.
