Course Objectives:
Getting acquainted with the new science - clay science, by combining various aspects in which clay minerals are being studied and applied in different scientific disciplines.
Learning Outcomes:
Acquiring knowledge on the basic mineralogical characteristics of clay minerals (division, structural properties, identification, quantitative determination, genesis), with a special aspect of the wide possibility of application in different disciplines and everyday life.
Content:

Theory teaching
The science of clay, new science, historical development. Introduction, definition, general characteristics of clay minerals. Minerals of clay - division, structural and mineralogical characteristics. Identification and quantitative determination of clay minerals. Genesis of clay minerals. Synthetic clay minerals and purification of natural clay. Mechanical characteristics of clay minerals. Acidic activation of clay. Thermally modified clay minerals. Minerals of clay and the origin of life. Clays, microorganisms and biomineralization. Clays and industrial applications. Clay, environment and health. Clay minerals and pollution control. Clay and management of nuclear waste. Clays and pesticides.

Practical teaching
In the course of practical work, students independently examine clay samples, perform identification, and on the basis of the obtained results, draw conclusions that they present and defend in seminar work.
