Fundamentals of Seismology

Study program:
Geophysics (IV semester -BsC)
Geotechnics (IV semester -BsC)
Name of subject: Fundamentals of Seismology
Instructors:
Prof. Dejan Vučković
Status: Compulsory
ECTS: 4
Prerequisites: Mathematics 2, Physics 1, English Language 2
Course Objectives:
The objective of the course is to acquire basic knowledge about earthquakes, ways of monitoring seismic activity, effects that are caused by earthquakes and ways of treating seismic risk on the environment.
Learning Outcomes:
It provides the basis for understanding the measurements applied in the domain of seismology, the understanding of the consequences of the earthquake, as well as the correct application of procedures related to seismic activity.
Content:

Theory teaching
General assumptions about the spreading of seismic or acoustic waves, the occurrence of deformations and the scales of the intensity and magnitude of the earthquake. Introduction to seismological monitoring, teleseismics, microtremores and prediction of a seismic event.

Practical teaching
Presentations from theory of expansion of seismic and acoustic waves, elastic deformations, geometric parametrization of seismogenic zones. Independent student projects related to the propagation of elastic waves, seismic monitoring and acquisition of microtremor data. In the framework of the exercises, students are preparing for the seminar work.
