Petrology

Study program:
Geophysics (III semester -BsC)
Geotechnics (III semester -BsC)
Hidrogeology (III semester -BsC)
Name of subject: Petrology
Instructors:
Prof. Kristina Šarić
Status: Compulsory
ECTS: 6
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
Introduction with major igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, their fabric and composition, economic importance, distribution and geodynamic settings; their regional distribution, especially in Serbia.
Learning Outcomes:
Qualifying for direct practical work in a field - determination of rocks and petrographical analyses (texture, structure, fabric, composition) and preparation for higher levels of studies.
Content:

Theory teaching
Structure of the Earth (plate tectonics). Rock forming and ore minerals. Igneous processes and igneous rocks. Classification, terminology and nomenclature. Geotectonic settings. Sedimentary rocks - classification, terminology, nomenclature, environment of formation of sedimentary rocks. Metamorphic rocks - classification, terminology, nomenclature. Wall-rock alteration and metamorphic facies.

Practical teaching
Practicing follows the program of lectures. It includes macroscopical identification of composition, texture and structure of rocks and rock determination.
