Course Objectives:
The objective of the course is to introduce students to basic elements of applied rock mechanics to open-pit design, principles and methods for slope stability analisys, mining equipment conditions and possibilities on open-pit passability.
Learning Outcomes:
The course will provide students to understand the problems of interaction between the rock and soil masive and the surface exploitation process, and to determine the basic rock and soil properties as the basis for the open-pit operation operation design.
Content:

Theory teaching
Introducing to the importance and process of the shear strength research and the theory of rock and soil material strength. The methodology of analyzing and selecting the data necessary for the opent-pit slope design, as well as the factors that influence their stability, will be studied. Introducting to basic slope stability calculation methods which represent the basis for open-pit and other objects designing and construction. Introducting to the ground bearing capacity and settlement calculating methods as guidelines for the assessment of the mining equipment passability in surface mining.

Practical teaching
Study of the basic factors that affect the slope stability. Field research and laboratory tests for the stability analysis of slopes will be learned. Study of procedures for input data analysis and selection for stability calculations. Methods for the slope stability analysis in soil (Fellenius, Bishop, Hoek-Bray and Konečni) and rock materials (Hoek Method) will be presented. Particular attention will be paid to the ground bearing capacity and settlement.
