Planning and optimization of open pit mine

Study program:
Mining Engineering (IV semester -PhD)
Name of subject: Planning and optimization of open pit mine
Instructors:
Prof. Dejan Stevanović
Status: Optional
ECTS: 10
Prerequisites: Completed course of Open pit mine design and planning, Optimization of Open pit mine and Technical and economic evaluation of mining project 1.
Course Objectives:
The objective of this course is to teach the students about the modern methods of open pit optimization and planning.
Learning Outcomes:
Successful completion of the course should enable the students to: -Use modern methods of planning and optimization of open pit mine and -Understand the decision investment decision technics -Understand the potential risks and sensibility of the mining project.
Content:

Theory teaching
In theory classes, students will learn about: - Economic principles of Open pit mine planning and optimization (economic factors, supply and demand for metals, income/profit), - The process of Open pit mine planning (planning phases, the importance of case study in planning process, exploitation system selection), - Financial concept (time dimension of money, present value and annuities, technic of investment decision making process), - Mining economy (economy and theory of mining, modeling of mine’s life circle), - Cost estimation (investment and operational costs), - Long-term strategy of the open pit mine (economic block model of open pit mine, optimization of final pit design, long-term, mid-term and operational production planning, the theory of cut-of grade component in ore), - The evaluation of mining project (techno-economical modeling), - Practical examples of planning and optimization of open pit mines (coper mine and metal mine example).

Practical teaching
Practical exercise in lab with real data for coal and metal open pit mines, by lecture units.
