Geomechanical Studies for the Construction of Underground Facilities

Study program:
Mining Engineering (III semester -PhD)
Name of subject: Geomechanical Studies for the Construction of Underground Facilities
Instructors:
Prof. Nebojša Gojković
Status: Optional
ECTS: 10
Prerequisites: -
Course Objectives:
The objective of the course is to introduce students with with the basic geomechanical research that are necessary for underground chambers and facilities design.
Learning Outcomes:
The course will provide students to understand the problems of interaction between the working environment (roskmass) and mining operations, and determining the basic rock properties as the starting point for further mining activities. The underground chambers and facilities stability is the basis of the study of rock mechanics in order to perform safe mining operations, which is the imperative of modern underground mining exploitation.
Content:

Theory teaching
During the course, students will be introduced to the research methods that are necessary for underground chambers and facilities design. The basic algotithm for rockmass research program development as a basis for capital underground chambers and facilities design and construction. Application of certain rockmass laboratory and field testing and research methods as well as classification sytems that are necessary for for underground facilities design. Special attention will be dedicated to utilization of underground facilities for different purposese beside mining.

Practical teaching
Students will be introduced to the rockmass physical and mechanical properties researcha as well as to the theory of rock and soil material strength. Up-to-date method for analyzing the rockmass stress state around underground chambers and facilities. In particular, they will be introduce to the methods for analyzing the underground mining facilities stability.
