Explosives and Ignition Systems

Study program:
Underground Construction (VII semester -BsC)
Name of subject: Explosives and Ignition Systems
Instructors:
Prof. Suzana Lutovac, Dr Miloš Gligorić
Status: Optional
ECTS: 5
Prerequisites: /
Course Objectives:
The main objective of the course is to familiarize students with the most important explosive materials and explosives used in mining, the properties of explosives, and the areas of their application in mining. Among all the technical faculties, only on the Faculty of Mining, the students thoroughly study the technology of production and application of explosives.
Learning Outcomes:
Students acquire knowledge to be able to deal with blasting in mining and other industries, special blasting, blasting for military purposes, etc.
Content:

Theory teaching
Definition, division and characteristics of explosive substances. Physical, thermochemical and explosive characteristics of explosives. Chemical stability, gelatinization and phlegmatization of explosive substances. Nitration theory. Powders. Division: homogeneous and composite powders. Black powder. Industrial production of black powder. Smokeless powder. Initial-primary explosive substances - production, protection measures and application. Brisant-secondary explosive substances and their mixtures (nitro compounds, nitrate esters, ammonium nitrate) - industrial production, protection measures and application. Simple and complex brisant explosives, technology of obtaining and application. Modern ammonium nitrate oil explosives (AN-FO mixtures and SLURRY explosives) for mechanized filling - production at the place of use. Emulsion explosives. Explosives based on fuel and air mixture (FAE). Systems for the initiation of explosives. Blasting caps, electric detonators, safety fuse and detonating cords, boosters, non-electric initiating systems.

Practical teaching
Testing of physical and chemical properties of mining explosives (density, chemical stability, sensitivity to initiation, ignition temperature, temperature and heat of explosion, water resistance). Testing of technical and mining characteristics of mining explosives (working capacity, relative working ability, brisance, detonation velocity, sensitivity to impact, transfer of detonation, safety of the methane explosives to methane and coal dust). Testing of the means for ignition of the explosives (brisance, working ability and safety of blasting cap, resistance and sensitivity to the heat of electric detonators, flammability and combustibility of safety fuse, quality of detonating cord).
