Blasting in Surface Mining

Study program:
Surface Mining of Mineral Deposits (VII semester -BsC)
Name of subject: Blasting in Surface Mining
Instructors:
Prof. Lazar Kričak, Prof. Milanka Negovanović
Status: Compulsory
ECTS: 5
Prerequisites: Exploration and Exploitation Drilling
Course Objectives:
The aim of this course is to acquire knowledge on blasting methods applied in exploitation of solid mineral raw materials on surface mines.
Learning Outcomes:
During this course, students will become familiar with explosives and initiation systems, basic blasting methods, methods for calculating the basic parameters of drilling and blasting in the exploitation of solid mineral raw materials in surface mines.
Content:

Theory teaching
Introduction, Physical-mechanical and technical characteristics of the rocks. Drilling of blast holes. Historical development of explosive materials and explosives. Classification of explosive processes, explosive materials and explosives. Physical - chemical properties and technical properties of explosives. Initiation systems, classification and basic characteristics. Explosion mechanism, hydrodynamic detonation theory, mechanism of explosion effect on the environment. The process of rock fragmentation. Blasting technology in surface mines. Bench production blasting, blasting parameters, powder factor, bench blasting geometry, the construction of explosive charge, the calculation of optimum delay time, initiation patterns. Secondary blasting, blasting of oversized boulders. Environmental control in blasting operations, vibration control, seismic effect of blasting explosions, types of seismic waves, control of flyrock, air blast and toxic fumes from blasting. Controlled blasting, peak particle velocity, buffer zone, buffer blasting, contour blasting, line drilling, presplitting blasting, smooth blasting, cushion blasting. Blasting in the extraction of dimension stone blocks. Preparation works for blasting operation. Borehole control and preparation for loading. Loading and stemming. Procedure after initiation. Liquidation of unexploded explosive charges. Blasting notification procedure. Storing explosives and explosive materials. Transport of explosives and explosive materials. Destruction of explosives and explosive materials. Technical blasting project. Blasting documentation.

Practical teaching
Testing of the characteristics of explosives and initiation systems - laboratory exercises. Complex calculation of drilling and blasting parameters - calculation exercises. Practical exercises for the preparation of primer cartridge, loading the blast holes with explosives and the connection of blast holes into blast pattern - field exercises.
